Take note of the size of this painting. It is a much larger scale work than I usually post on my blog. I had it on the back burner in my studio for a while and have been experimenting with doing larger works based on some of my earlier small paintings. Everyone who has seen it has encouraged me to post it on the blog to see what kind of reaction I get. Let me know what you think and send an email if you’re interested in it. It would command a strong presence on any wall.

In this painting I’ve included Walt Disney character blocks of Mickey Mouse and Pluto The Pup with a stack of Froebel blocks in the background. Friedrich Froebel’s (reputed to be the inventor of kindergarten) Froblox or “Gifts” created these blocks in 1830’s for kindergarten children to encourage creativity and design abilities are still available for purchase today. I’ve mentioned these blocks before HERE. The Disney blocks encouraged children to learn the alphabet and word meaning related to a picture image of the word, while the Frobel blocks were intended to encourage design and building skills as attested to by the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

This is a reworking and update of a painting done last summer. I wanted to get back to this painting and work on reflections and highlights to bring it up to date.

I've alway enjoyed working with small objects and zooming in to see details and textures that we sometimes overlook. If it's not fun I'll stop doing it.

These children’s blocks still fascinate and are a source of some important historical information. Each block had alphabet characters and pictures of many things with the names printed below. Some had story or nursery rhyme characters printed as well and many of them later had cartoon characters such as Mickey Mouse stamped into them. The blocks in this grouping are from two different sets and include a deer, hen, bear, and truck images printed one the side. One block is from a Mickey Mouse or Walt Disney set and the others are an alphabet set. Even today children’s blocks continue to be made but the old ones still have a classic style and quality that is unique.

This painting was done some years ago while on sabbatical visiting the Cathedral of Cologne (Koln), Germany during Carnival (Karneval). Cologne Carnival is one of the most famous celebrations in Europe and is the period right before Lent. In this case I went into a small restaurant for a sandwich and saw this group celebrating Carnival. Through the window I could see the carnival rides with the Cathedral in the background. The juxtaposition of the people, carnival rides and the Cathedral intrigued me so I decided to make this painting.
Because many of you have ask about larger paintings, I’ve decided to post some of my larger works and am planning some new larger works of the daily painting themes so you can see the difference in size or scale. If anyone is interested in this work or of seeing larger works of specific past small daily posts, you can send an email to my blog above.

This summer while cutting some low hanging branches from the maple tree near my driveway, I noticed something on the end of the branch I was about to trim. On closer inspection two unmoving baby hummingbirds were staring back at me from their nest. Obviously the branch didn’t get trimmed and I spent the next week photographing their progress until one day they left the nest and flew away. The branch is still there and the abandoned nest is slowly falling apart. From time to time I’ve spotted these two from a distance near the back woods. I don’t have a hummingbird feeder, but I’m now tempted to install one in the spring to see if I can entice them to show up more closely to the house.

The drawing for this has been on my table for a while. This swan in early morning light caught my eye and I want ed to share it. Light is an important part of any painting and is central to the idea of this image. The early light was coming from all around and was swirling around the swan in a fluid way almost as if it were liquid. I wanted to see how it would play out in a painting.

We watched this black bear rummaging around up on the mountainside most of the day, then in the evening he began to work his way down the hill toward us. We realized he wasn’t interested in us, but after gorging all day with pine nuts scavenged from squirrels caches and eating grubs and any other goodies he could find he was very thirsty and was headed down to the waterfall below us on the hillside. He past us only yards away where I got this view of him.

I’m thinking of eventually doing a full body image on a larger scale, but of course that will require a lot more time than a small daily painting such as this. If anyone is interested in a larger view, let me know. He was one of the largest black bears I’ve seen.

This is the final and finished posting of “Bighorn in Twilight”. I’m posting the finished image here with the three step-by-step progress images below for comparison. You can read about the steps in previous postings below. Because of the twilight colors the painting has very subtle tones that may be hard to see on your computer screen. Clicking on the image for a larger view may help but will likely not give the full range of colors in the painting. Thanks for following the development of this image and waiting for the finished work.

Holmes County, Ohio is home to many fine Amish farms. Traveling in that area this summer, we came across this farm with two Dapple Gray mares in the pasture. I’m more accustomed to seeing Belgian horses or mules on Amish farms so it was a surprise to see these two beautiful Grays in this area, and I knew right away I wanted to do a painting of these beautiful animals. You can tell a “Grey” from a white horse by their dark skin color seen in the ears, around the eyes, nose and legs where there is no white hair to cover the skin.

This painting sends me back to my childhood in Illinois where I remember a neighbor who had a team of Dapple Grays and one year plowed my grandmother’s garden with them.

The form of this architecture against sky and earth intrigued me to paint this scene. The way openings in the building led one into and out of the building and the way light and shadow played off the surfaces had a hypnotic effect on me. This painting was done some time ago but I'm updating it and reposting it here in a new format.

This is a reposting of an earlier image. This painting was done from a single apple, just painting it in different positions to create the composition on the mantel. The procession of the four apples across the ledge while still getting the light right demanded a careful study of the light in the actual room and the shadow effects of one apple on another.

Saturday we were out on Falling Waters Trail again. It was a bit chilly but when we got to a pond near Teft Road, we saw some Canadian Geese fly in. I got a beautiful shot of a drake showing off on the water. The light was gorgeous with partly cloudy afternoon sun. I wasn’t sure I got the movement, but when I got home and looked at the photo, I knew I had to paint it. It’s important for me to get the ambient light just right. For this one I had to adjust the light a bit, but everything else was perfect.

While I don’t usually post larger paintings on this blog, this painting is part of my one-person exhibition titled “Roots of Reality: East and West”, Sage Center for the Arts, Hillsdale College, Hillsdale, Michigan. The exhibition will continue until March 29. On my other blog you can scroll down to the February 16 posting to see the details of the exhibition.

Not far from St. Marks Square in Venice on a lagoon called Bacino Orseolo, gondoliers moor their boats when not in use for a period of time or during the winter. One day in winter, the gondolas were lined up and covered, creating an unusual pattern of shapes, colors, reflections and light. The beauty of these ancient forms added to the composition inspiring me to create this painting.

Violets are one of the first flowers in our backyard indicating that spring is here and warm weather is just around the corner. Everyone remembers the poem, “Roses are red, Violets are blue, Sugar is sweet, And so are you”, however violets come in many colors including Violet. I’ve painted several violet paintings you can see on my blog by doing a ‘Violet” search including “Violets for Mothers Day”. This one is of purple violets, which is the state flower of my home state of Illinois.

This is the second game of jacks I’ve painted, however this is a different set of jacks that give a more colorful composition. The game of jacks was originally called “Jackstones” because it was played with stones or even bones. I’ve seen it still played this way in other countries around the world. It’s still great for kids to develop eye-hand coordination.

After spending a lot of time preparing an exhibition titled “Roots of Reality: East and West”, I felt the need to get back to exploring a few ideas of purely studying concepts of classical realism with paint. I’ve done a few still life setups with grapes but in this one I’m looking at the push and pull of color. Here the challenge was to set up the green grapes in a warm light so that the reds and warm tones of light contrast with the green tones in the grapes. If you look closely, you will see the warm reds, ochres and ceruleans showing up in the shadows. And the warm red/browns in the table top also complement the cool colors in the grapes, not to mentions the droplets of water that reflect both complements.

In January we were privileged to spend nine days in Cancun, Mexico. We spent some time on Isla Mujeres, the Island off the coast northwest of Cancun. Here is a view of some boats in the harbor where we came in. The weather was beautiful staying around 80 degrees each day, so it was quite a shock when we returned to –14 degrees and ten inches of snow in Michigan. I hope this view gives you some relief from winter weather.

One day this week all the birds stayed away from my bird feeder all morning. Since this was not a usual occurrence I checked out the woods in my backyard and spotted a hawk sitting in the maple tree. At first I thought it was the red tailed hawk who had come before, but after looking through the lens of my telephoto lens, we identified it as a juvenile Cooper’s Hawk. Later in the morning when I got too close while photographing him, he flew away and the rest of the birds slowly returned to the feeder. I spotted him again today sitting on the fence rail at the back of the yard, but he was gone before I could get my camera focused.

My Vision

The idea to do a daily painting began for me in November 2006 as a way to make paintings available to a growing number of collectors. Large original paintings cost more than many people are willing or able to pay, however small original works can be purchased for a reasonable price. It’s a very democratic idea to make art available so more people can collect original artworks.

I create a new painting every few days with subjects varying depending on the ideas I'm currently considering. My paintings are acrylic on archival hand-primed board with a 1/2inch edge to easily hang without a frame. All paintings posted are for sale unless indicated and I’ve shipped throughout the USA, Canada and internationally.

If you see a painting you like, it may be purchased using the “Buy Now” button on my blog, my Daily Painters gallery, or sending an email to me to arrange payment. Because colors on a computer screen are not always accurate, when purchasing I guarantee your satisfaction or you may return the work for a full refund. You can read my complete guarantee by going to the sidebar of my blog. Please take time to browse my blog archives and sidebar for more information and enjoy the blog.

We were driving into the mountains in Sichuan province when we came upon these ancient stone lions. They were created as part of the tomb of FAN Min Que in LuShan County, near Yaan city, Sichuan, China during Eastern Han Dynasty (AD 205). I’m always fascinated by the expressive quality of such figures so I’ve tried to capture that in this small painting.
