We traveled for almost a month in this area and photographed and painted many images. This was painted in early morning with a view of the Tetons from the east side. I was overwhelmed by the immense space and light of these magnificent mountains.

This Little House Wren has been greeting me on the deck post while I'm having my morning tea. While he was building his nest nearby he would sing his song all day but now I think he is too busy feeding his family, so I don't see him so often. I haven't discovered his nest, he keeps it well hidden because there is a lot of other wildlife around.

The vivid colors of the swallow’s cobalt blue feathers against the reds of the stucco wall caught my attention and drew me to create this painting. I like capturing the moment when some action or movement is about to happen. It’s what draws me into the next painting.

This painting is a further development of a posting from July 12, 2012. I decided to go back and rework parts of the painting and replace the additional two swimming birds with cygnets (young swans) to make the painting more unified. The cygnets remind me of the constellation Cygnus going all the way back to Greek mythology and in todays’ astronomical study has many stars with known planets with some thought to be in the habitable zone of their stars. So this painting has more meaning for me than might be apparent just on the surface.

Bull Elk Gathering His Harem

At the beginning of rutting season in Yellowstone this bull elk is gathering his harem. Here in the evening we came upon this young elk cow and were so close we could hear her breathing and chewing as the great bull eyes us from across the stream. Evening is a magical time as the light plays tricks on our vision. We see the cool tones of the forest in the background and the golden tones of the meadow in the foreground. Both warm and cool colors are reflected in the bodies of the elk sharply defining them at first then almost causing them to disappear into the shadows as the sun continues to set.

Traveling in Illinois and Ohio one sees fewer of these old barns still standing. The evening shadows of the day reflect the evening of this era of our Midwest landscape that is slowly passing into night. Painting is my way of preserving these vanishing images.
