My first sighting of Cedar Waxwings was as a kid of about eleven or twelve years old. A flock of Waxwings invaded our yard and settled on our cherry tree. They were there for a few days then disappeared. When I spotted this pair while biking the other day I knew I wanted to paint them to bring back the memory of many years ago.

As a teenager hunting pheasant in Illinois, I didn’t realize this bird was introduced rather than a native species. Because it fit into the environment so well it was much later that I learned it has been introduced into America from Eurasia in the 1800’s.

Although I don’t see this beautiful bird often here in my area of Michigan, there seems to be a good number of these birds in Southeast Michigan and I’ll sometimes see one wander through my yard. This pair was spotted one early morning in the cornfield near us and I’m now hunting them only with a camera and paintbrush.

These Red-Bellied Woodpeckers have been visiting my backyard for several years now. I've been waiting for a view that demostrates something about these colorful birds. This composition shows their territorial aggressiveness and also the distinctive markings on back and belly of this unique bird.

This pair of White Crowned Sparrows has been coming to my backyard for several years. In this image they seemed to be in a conversation, and since I don't understand their language they probably are, hence the title of the painting.

I've been watching them for a while and finally got an image together that I wanted to paint so here it is.

Back on the Falling Water Trail biking again, I spotted a Great Egret on the banks of the Kalamazoo River. Michigan is only the summer range for Egrets so I was surprised to see this one so early. Since it was about 200 yards away, my first thought was just another mute swan until I looked through my camera’s telephoto lens. I haven’t seen him again so maybe he was just passing through.

The morning light gave modeling to the body so I could really see the detail of the birds form. I hope I’ve captured that so you will be able to enjoy the unusual colors brought out by the early morning sunlight. Even the color of the beak was enhanced by the sun shining through to give it a transparency and a vivid orange/yellow color against cool tones of the water behind. This was one of those rare sightings that demanded some study of the light and form to get it right. Sighting this bird was almost a mystical experience that gave me the feeling of almost meeting a being out of history or another dimension.

This summer while cutting some low hanging branches from the maple tree near my driveway, I noticed something on the end of the branch I was about to trim. On closer inspection two unmoving baby hummingbirds were staring back at me from their nest. Obviously the branch didn’t get trimmed and I spent the next week photographing their progress until one day they left the nest and flew away. The branch is still there and the abandoned nest is slowly falling apart. From time to time I’ve spotted these two from a distance near the back woods. I don’t have a hummingbird feeder, but I’m now tempted to install one in the spring to see if I can entice them to show up more closely to the house.
