This is the second game of jacks I’ve painted, however this is a different set of jacks that give a more colorful composition. The game of jacks was originally called “Jackstones” because it was played with stones or even bones. I’ve seen it still played this way in other countries around the world. It’s still great for kids to develop eye-hand coordination.

After spending a lot of time preparing an exhibition titled “Roots of Reality: East and West”, I felt the need to get back to exploring a few ideas of purely studying concepts of classical realism with paint. I’ve done a few still life setups with grapes but in this one I’m looking at the push and pull of color. Here the challenge was to set up the green grapes in a warm light so that the reds and warm tones of light contrast with the green tones in the grapes. If you look closely, you will see the warm reds, ochres and ceruleans showing up in the shadows. And the warm red/browns in the table top also complement the cool colors in the grapes, not to mentions the droplets of water that reflect both complements.

In January we were privileged to spend nine days in Cancun, Mexico. We spent some time on Isla Mujeres, the Island off the coast northwest of Cancun. Here is a view of some boats in the harbor where we came in. The weather was beautiful staying around 80 degrees each day, so it was quite a shock when we returned to –14 degrees and ten inches of snow in Michigan. I hope this view gives you some relief from winter weather.

One day this week all the birds stayed away from my bird feeder all morning. Since this was not a usual occurrence I checked out the woods in my backyard and spotted a hawk sitting in the maple tree. At first I thought it was the red tailed hawk who had come before, but after looking through the lens of my telephoto lens, we identified it as a juvenile Cooper’s Hawk. Later in the morning when I got too close while photographing him, he flew away and the rest of the birds slowly returned to the feeder. I spotted him again today sitting on the fence rail at the back of the yard, but he was gone before I could get my camera focused.

My Vision

The idea to do a daily painting began for me in November 2006 as a way to make paintings available to a growing number of collectors. Large original paintings cost more than many people are willing or able to pay, however small original works can be purchased for a reasonable price. It’s a very democratic idea to make art available so more people can collect original artworks.

I create a new painting every few days with subjects varying depending on the ideas I'm currently considering. My paintings are acrylic on archival hand-primed board with a 1/2inch edge to easily hang without a frame. All paintings posted are for sale unless indicated and I’ve shipped throughout the USA, Canada and internationally.

If you see a painting you like, it may be purchased using the “Buy Now” button on my blog, my Daily Painters gallery, or sending an email to me to arrange payment. Because colors on a computer screen are not always accurate, when purchasing I guarantee your satisfaction or you may return the work for a full refund. You can read my complete guarantee by going to the sidebar of my blog. Please take time to browse my blog archives and sidebar for more information and enjoy the blog.
