Saturday we were out on Falling Waters Trail again. It was a bit chilly but when we got to a pond near Teft Road, we saw some Canadian Geese fly in. I got a beautiful shot of a drake showing off on the water. The light was gorgeous with partly cloudy afternoon sun. I wasn’t sure I got the movement, but when I got home and looked at the photo, I knew I had to paint it. It’s important for me to get the ambient light just right. For this one I had to adjust the light a bit, but everything else was perfect.

While I don’t usually post larger paintings on this blog, this painting is part of my one-person exhibition titled “Roots of Reality: East and West”, Sage Center for the Arts, Hillsdale College, Hillsdale, Michigan. The exhibition will continue until March 29. On my other blog you can scroll down to the February 16 posting to see the details of the exhibition.

Not far from St. Marks Square in Venice on a lagoon called Bacino Orseolo, gondoliers moor their boats when not in use for a period of time or during the winter. One day in winter, the gondolas were lined up and covered, creating an unusual pattern of shapes, colors, reflections and light. The beauty of these ancient forms added to the composition inspiring me to create this painting.

This is a sequel to "Wild Violets in Full Bloom" and "Wild Violets for Mother's Day".March 20, 2009 is just a few days away and the first day of spring this year. Violets are one of the first flowers in our backyard indicating that spring is here and warm weather is just around the corner. Everyone remembers the poem, “Roses are red, Violets are blue, Sugar is sweet, And so are you”, however violets come in many colors including Violet. I’ve painted several violet paintings you can see on my blog by doing a ‘Violet” search including “Violets for Mothers Day”. This one is of purple violets, which is the state flower of my home state of Illinois.

When I thought about doing a painting of dominos, I found this vintage set in the toy/game closet. They appear to be made by stamping the pattern and dots in wood blocks. The trademark Halsam® is on the box and I found a lot of these sets being sold on ebay.
