I originally drew this water buffalo into a much larger painting titled “Karst Mountains”, (see painting below) however I realized while working on the painting the buffalo would distract from the view of the mountains reflected in the water so I painted him out.

In this smaller painting the buffalo has just surfaced still eating vegetation he has brought up from the bottom of the lake.

In Asian culture the water buffalo is still used to plow rice fields and to pull heavy loads as they have been used for thousands of years. They are highly prized animals and are even used in bullfights to prove their strength and dominance over other bulls in the area. You can read the story of the Asian Bullfights here: HERE

The downy woodpecker is a beautiful and ironic bird. We love them because they are beautiful and so interesting to watch, but they can sometimes do damage to our house or buildings. This one is outside my window in the woods where I can keep an eye on him.

This little nuthatch has been coming to my feeder for about a month. He will quickly grab a sunflower seed then dart off to hide it in a nearby tree, then hurry back to do it all over again. Seems like a lot of energy is spent for just one seed at a time. I guess he doesn’t trust that I’ll be here to fill the bird feeder this winter when it gets cold and snowy out there.

These images have almost disappeared from the Illinois landscape. They are now archeological icons of another era where I grew up in central Illinois.  I chose to paint this image as an antique item from that vanishing landscape.

It feels good to be back in the studio after a long absence due to health issues and recent recuperative travel. This painting shows some experimentation with ways to incorporate my early abstract expressionist style without giving up realism. It’s a discipline that I’ll continue to explore. Also recent travel to China, Cambodia and Vietnam may show up in future paintings. Keep tuned to my blog and see what happens.
