In 1961 Ingmar Bergman wrote and directed a film titled Through a Glass Darkly (Swedish translation: Sȧsom i en spegel) literally meaning As in a Mirror. In the film a family comes to understand some of the mystery of life as Bergman takes them through the process of discovery and understanding.

The artist often realizes what we see directly does not always tell us the whole story, but rather is conditioned by what we have already learned or things that are reflected around us. The title is taken from a Biblical quote in I Corinthians 13:12. It suggests that we only know ultimate reality in a partial way, but will eventually understand the truth more fully.

I photographed this barn many years ago but only recently zoomed in to see this open half door and interesting latch. The barn interior intrigued me and enticed me to create the painting. This barn was once owned by the grandfather of a colleague in my university, so there was some talk of doing a painting of the barn, but that never happened.

Now I am revisiting some of those old images and this painting is one result of that look back into history. I don't know if this barn is still standing since many of these old barns are now being taken down.

Sometimes it’s the simple things that are the most engaging and beautiful, such as a simple image or a simple idea. The textures and shapes of this old door are simple and beautiful, but for me the idea is the most compelling. The door has been opened just a crack to suggest something new, a new life, a new freedom, new beginning on the other side. Moving through the open door implies a new birth or transformation. It gives us hope of the possibility of seeing the world from a completely new perspective. I think this is why I find these old doors so intriguing.
