This is another of the alphabet ABC paintings that I began some time ago. I’ve been on the lookout for a cat image and finally found a small cat sculpture I like. It’s a small antique pewter image of a cat stretching that fit into the idea I wanted to paint. There are two sets of Embossing Company blocks here and the lion is from a third set of even older blocks.

There is something about flight that is magical, especially when we observe it in nature. Seeing this bird stretch wings to take flight was a mystical moment that I wanted to capture. It’s not as easy as you might think to catch that instant just before taking flight.

This painting celebrates the beauty we experience each year as summer comes to an end in a riot of colors as nature paints the trees with yellow, gold, orange and vivid reds and pinks. It has taken all the colors in my palette of reds and yellows to portray a snapshot of this fall season. The sound of wind-rustled leaves and the scent of burning leaves are embedded in this painting along with all the visual information you see here.

Chinese Lanterns

This plant looks like the red lanterns seen everywhere on the streets of China. I'm always interested in the contrasts of textures, particularly the wood textures in the wall behind the plant. While it does not have a light inside, the Chinese Lantern or Japanese-lantern plant does have a berry inside that has been used for it's medicinal value but it is said to have some strong side effects so don't try eating it. It's an interesting plant that will spread rapidly once it has taken root.

It's the simple things of the past that bring back memories, such as a ride through the woods in a carriage. Even if one has never had such an experience the idea has a simplicity and beauty that affects the emotions. This team of dapple grays was sketched from a recent ride during holiday festivities. I think many people can identify with the feeling of such an event.

The rooster is the tenth in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac signs. It is symbolic of fidelity and punctuality. In ancient times the rooster would awaken people in the morning to begin their workday. It also symbolized casting out the dark or evil night and the beginning of the new “light” day.

I saw this particular rooster in the courtyard of a museum in Cambodia a few years ago when we visited there.

Because of our unusual weather this year many birds hung around longer than usual before beginning their southward flights. These Canadian geese are just now taking off for their long trek south.
