Blue Jays have come to my backyard for many years. They are intelligent and fearless birds. More than once I've watched a Blue Jay dive after a hawk sitting on my wood pile. The Jay knows he can out maneuver the hawk in flight but cannot escape a diving hawk so he always stays behind or above the hawk in flight.

I've put a lot of detail into this painting so you can get a good idea of the Blue Jays beautiful markings. Jays can live a long time. Cornell lab of Ornithology tells us Blue Jays have lived to be at least 17 years old.

This pair comes regularly to my bird feeder and are fond of sunflower seeds and nuts. In my yard they are quite tolerant of other birds at the feeder, but most birds will quickly defer to them because of their size and power.
