 This new project seeks to bring Art and Technology together using a CNC machine (computer driven routing tool) to carve relief images of my paintings and photos from wood then finish the results either as a wood relief or a relief carved painting.

My most recent project has been to bring Art and Technology together by using a CNC machine to carve relief images of my paintings and photos from wood then finish the results in a variety of ways. On the next few postings I will show some examples of my initial experiments.

It is possible for me to use a painting or photo to translate into a relief or 3D image so that the image can be carved in wood.  I’m still experimenting with many ideas so if you have some thoughts about things you might like to see me try, please email me. However not all photos work well for this kind of process. I’ve found that using Aspen wood gives a clear image so that the wood grain doesn’t interfere with the carved image. 

The image for this post is of a ruby throated hummingbird that I’ve used a software called “Blender” to create a relief image to carve then paint the relief image for the special 3D effect you see here.
