I photographed this barn many years ago but only recently zoomed in to see this open half door and interesting latch. The barn interior intrigued me and enticed me to create the painting. This barn was once owned by the grandfather of a colleague in my university, so there was some talk of doing a painting of the barn, but that never happened.

Now I am revisiting some of those old images and this painting is one result of that look back into history. I don't know if this barn is still standing since many of these old barns are now being taken down.

We watched this black bear rummaging around up on the mountainside most of the day, then in the evening he began to work his way down the hill toward us. We realized he wasn’t interested in us, but after gorging all day with pine nuts scavenged from squirrels caches and eating grubs and any other goodies he could find he was very thirsty and was headed down to the waterfall below us on the hillside. He past us only yards away where I got this view of him.

I’m thinking of eventually doing a full body image on a larger scale, but of course that will require a lot more time than a small daily painting such as this. If anyone is interested in a larger view, let me know. He was one of the largest black bears I’ve seen.

The form of this architecture against sky and earth intrigued me to paint this scene. The way openings in the building led one into and out of the building and the way light and shadow played off the surfaces had a hypnotic effect on me. This painting was done some time ago but I'm updating it and reposting it here in a new format.
