In 1961 Ingmar Bergman wrote and directed a film titled Through a Glass Darkly (Swedish translation: Sȧsom i en spegel) literally meaning As in a Mirror. In the film a family comes to understand some of the mystery of life as Bergman takes them through the process of discovery and understanding.
The artist often realizes what we see directly does not
always tell us the whole story, but rather is conditioned by what we have
already learned or things that are reflected around us. The title is taken from
a Biblical quote in I Corinthians 13:12. It suggests that we only know ultimate
reality in a partial way, but will eventually understand the truth more fully.
