Painting can be more than just the subject. Here colors create a pattern of shapes, textures and movement.

Fall leaves are turning color after a first frost in Michigan. This year cold weather is coming slowly and color on the bike path explode with lots of contrast in red, green, blue and yellow. After first frost colors change rapidly, however these vines still show a whole range of colors.

Fall is harvest time when beautiful fresh fruit and vegetables become available. In Michigan apples and pears were abundant this year. Backyard pear and apple trees drew lots of deer to steal low hanging fruit directly from the trees. On this mantle sit an apple and pear that escaped the deer in my backyard.

A pair of eagles landing on their nest in northern Michigan. This quite site is located in a remote wetlands area. This nest was moved from the local baseball field to this quite site located in a more remote area of the wetlands about a mile east of the town. Apparently the eagles have accepted the new location that gives them greater safety and protection.

Tibetan Racing Ponies

These ponies were being prepared for a race we observed in July. This Tibetan horseracing event was several kilometers long and the small Tibetan ponies are pushed really hard. They have colorful harnesses and are ridden bareback. The two races we saw were first the adult race, next teenagers of both genders competed in the second race. The races started in a crowd of about 20 horses and continued for three or four rounds around the one half kilometer track. The ponies are well groomed with brightly colored harness and decorative tassels.

These young Tibetan riders seem to live close to the earth, yet most of them have cell phones or smartphones. One young man pointed to his phone and declared “píng guǒ” which is Chinese for “Apple”. He wanted me to know he had an iPhone.

As we arrived here, we were told that authorities had just shut down Internet throughout the area. There had been “Free Tibet” protests and police roadblocks were checking vehicles to see who was traveling in and out of the area. I tried to be as unobtrusive as possible, since I didn’t want to be asked to leave the area before seeing the festival.

Recently, driving through Central and Southern Illinois, the area where I was born, I was struck by the fact that all one sees now is miles and miles of corn and beans. Of course the flat prairie emphasizes the horizontal lines of the horizon, so I wanted to paint this flat land.

One reason there have been so few postings on this blog recently is because of our summer travel in China during July. We’ve had some incredible experiences so I’ll try to relate some of those in paintings. This painting shows two young Buddhist novices before a Tibetan temple we visited in Northwestern Sichuan. I chose this subject because of the attractive young children, but sometimes a painting has a way of transforming into a larger story.

Here the story became one of looking to the future as represented by the two young novices with the historic architecture and older monks in the background, looking out at what is evolving or developing in the years to come. We can all wonder about the future, yet in this complex culture one can only speculate or dream, but never really know what will develop.

The cardinals are singing early in the morning this time of year. I hear them in the willow tree next door and in the evergreen tree beside my deck. This pair keeps showing up in the driveway every morning, inviting me to paint them so everyone can see.
